The Power of a Smile

It’s said there are 19 different types of smiles. Your smile is one of the most unique and beautiful accessories you can have. It expresses emotions in a wide variety of circumstances and is the first thing people notice about you.

There is power in a smile. They can be impactful, and contagious, spreading joy to those around you. There are many reasons to love your smile, and the team at WAO is here to remind you why you should flash your beautiful smile more often:

1. It’s a Natural Stress Relief

When you smile, you immediately release feel-good hormones such as dopamine, serotonin, cortisol, and endorphins. While your cortisol levels lower, so do the physical effects of any stress you may be experiencing. Using your facial muscles gives you the power to lower your blood pressure, reduce your heart rate, and increase your ability to relax. At the same time, your serotonin and dopamine levels rise, which is why the simple act of smiling improves your mood. The next time you are in a tense or stressful situation, put on a smile to send positive signals to your brain.

Smiling not only relieves your stress, but can also lower the stress levels of those around you. Because smiling is contagious, flashing a big smile could have a ripple effect and put the people surrounding you at ease.

2. It Promotes Good Health

Being sad weakens your immune system, just another reason to focus on smiling more. As noted above, smiling reduces stress levels and lowers your blood pressure, two key factors for cardiovascular health. Because of the endorphins released, smiling also helps fight pain, anxiety, and depression.

Not only does smiling affect your overall health, but it also impacts your dental health. Having a straight and aligned bite and smile makes it easier to brush and floss your teeth, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Ultimately, smiling improves your immune system and physical and emotional health, which contributes to a longer life.

3. It Increases Workplace Success

Smiling is not only good for your health, but helps to build relationships, make connections, and improve your work. Studies have shown that if you smile when you talk, people will feel that you sound “friendly,” increasing your trustworthiness and approachability. Smiling may also make you feel more creative, productive, and positive, improving your prospects for a new position or promotion.

4. It Leaves a Memorable First Impression

According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, nearly 48% of people will remember your smile, but only 25% will remember the first thing you said. Your smile leaves a memorable first impression, which is why it is important to have a smile you love.

5. It Boosts Your Confidence

Confidence is used to describe the feeling of believing in yourself and feeling secure within your own body and mind. Unfortunately, it is common for people to have low confidence levels and not take pride in their physical appearance or life achievements. It is common for people to smile without showing their teeth because they don’t think they have a smile they can be proud of. Smiling, however, is known to boost confidence by making you both look good and feel good. Work on building your self-esteem by flashing your smile every chance you get.
