Holiday Smiles: How to Protect Your Braces and Aligners This Season

A Season Full of Smiles

The holiday season brings festive gatherings, delicious meals, and plenty of photo opportunities. But for orthodontic patients, the season also comes with a unique set of challenges. Sticky desserts, busy schedules, and travel plans can all interfere with your orthodontic care. At Wafelbakker Anderson Orthodontics, we want every patient to enjoy the holidays while keeping their treatment on track. Here are our top tips to protect your braces and aligners this season.

  1. Enjoy the Feast—Braces-Friendly Style
From turkey and mashed potatoes to pumpkin pie, many holiday favorites are safe and braces-friendly. But steer clear of sticky caramel, hard nuts, candy canes, or crunchy popcorn. These treats can bend wires or break brackets, potentially setting back your treatment. Soft cookies, cheese platters, and warm rolls are safer alternatives that still let you celebrate.
  2. Don’t Skip Your Routine
It’s easy to get off schedule during the holiday hustle, but your oral hygiene routine is more important than ever. Brush after meals, floss daily, and rinse with water when you can’t brush right away. For aligner patients, remember to wear your trays 20–22 hours a day—even when traveling.
  3. Pack a Holiday Care Kit
If you’re hitting the road this season, a small orthodontic travel kit can make all the difference. Include:
  • A toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Floss or interdental brushes
  • Orthodontic wax for irritation
  • A mirror for quick checks
  • Extra aligners or elastics, if prescribed

Being prepared ensures you can handle any small mishaps and stay on track with your care.

  1. Keep Your Appointments
The holidays are busy, but don’t let orthodontic appointments slip through the cracks. These check-ins are vital to making sure your treatment is progressing as planned. If you need to travel, schedule your visit before you leave to avoid falling behind.
  2. Smile with Confidence in Every Photo
Braces and aligners are part of your smile journey, and they’re nothing to hide. Stand tall, smile wide, and know that you’re investing in a lifetime of confidence. If you’re worried about food getting stuck, keep a quick rinse kit on hand so you’re photo-ready at a moment’s notice.

A Season of Healthy, Happy Smiles

The holidays are about joy, connection, and celebration—and your smile should be part of that. With a little preparation and mindfulness, you can enjoy every bite, every photo, and every memory without worrying about your orthodontic treatment. At WAO, we’re here to keep you smiling brightly all season long.
