As the New Year approaches, many of us think about resolutions and ways to start fresh. Why not make your orthodontic care part of that plan? Here are a few of our favorite ways to help you kick off the year with a healthier, more confident smile.
1. Celebrate Progress and Set Goals
December is a fantastic time to reflect on the progress you’ve made in your orthodontic treatment and to set goals for the year ahead.
- Celebrate Your Wins: Take a moment to recognize how far you’ve come—whether it’s an improved smile or healthier habits. It’s all worth celebrating!
- Set New Goals: Maybe your goal is to wear your aligners consistently, brush more effectively, or avoid certain foods. Clear goals keep you motivated and accountable as you progress.
2. Schedule a Check-Up in January
The New Year is a great time to ensure everything is on track with your treatment. Booking a January check-up lets us address any adjustments, evaluate progress, and answer any questions you have for the year ahead. If you’re finishing your treatment soon, it’s also a chance to discuss retention and post-treatment care.
3. Start Fresh with New Oral Care Products
A new year is a wonderful excuse to treat yourself to fresh oral care essentials:
- Electric Toothbrush: An electric toothbrush makes brushing easier and more effective, especially for those with braces.
- Orthodontic-Friendly Floss or Picks: Specialized floss or floss threaders are a game-changer for cleaning around braces. If you’re using aligners, invest in retainer cleanser tablets for daily hygiene.
- Mouthwash: Using an alcohol-free, fluoridated mouthwash can support gum health and give you a fresh start each day.
Waterpik: A Waterpik is an amazing tool for cleaning between teeth and gums, especially if you have braces. It’s highly effective at removing food particles and plaque that can be hard to reach with regular floss. Many of our patients swear by it—including us! Using a Waterpik regularly is a game changer for keeping your smile fresh and healthy.
4. Align Your Orthodontic Routine with Other New Habits
If you’re already starting new routines like drinking more water, eating healthier, or staying active, it’s easy to add a few smile-friendly habits, too. Here are a few ideas:
- Drink Water Regularly: Water washes away sugar and bacteria, keeping your mouth cleaner between brushing.
- Snack Mindfully: Consider the effects on your braces or aligners and stick to foods that support your smile.
- Wear Aligners as Directed: If you have aligners, make sure to wear them for the recommended hours each day. It’s one of the most important habits for effective treatment!
5. Share the Smile Spirit with Others
The holiday season is about spreading joy, and your smile can be a part of that! A bright, confident smile not only makes you feel good but also lifts the spirits of those around you. We encourage you to share a photo of your holiday smile and tag us on social media – we’d love to see how you’re celebrating the season!
