Children’s Dental Health Month: Building Healthy Smiles from the Start

February is Children’s Dental Health Month, and at Wafelbakker Anderson Orthodontics, it’s a perfect time to highlight something that matters deeply to our team: helping children build healthy, confident smiles from an early age.

While orthodontic care is often associated with the teenage years, the foundation for a healthy bite and properly aligned smile begins much earlier. That’s why the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age seven. This early visit allows orthodontists to monitor growth, identify developing concerns, and determine the ideal timing for treatment—often preventing more complex issues later on.

Early orthodontic evaluations can help:

  • Guide jaw development
  • Create space for incoming adult teeth
  • Reduce the risk of impacted or crowded teeth
  • Support more efficient, effective treatment when the time is right

Not every child will need braces at a young age, but every child benefits from expert monitoring during these important growth years.

Making dental health approachable for kids

Throughout February, our young patients are participating in a creative art project designed to help them connect positive habits—like brushing, flossing, and caring for their teeth—with something fun and personal. When children understand why their oral health matters, they are more likely to take ownership of it.

Our goal is always to make orthodontic visits feel supportive, encouraging, and empowering. A child who feels confident about their smile today is more likely to maintain healthy habits for life.

At Wafelbakker Anderson Orthodontics, we are proud to partner with families throughout Morgan Hill, Gilroy, Hollister, and Walnut Creek to guide children through every stage of their smile journey.
