Braces: Best Practices

Follow these aftercare tips to stay on track with your treatment plan and to keep your braces looking great.

So, you recently got braces at Wafelbakker Anderson Orthodontics. Congratulations! This means that you will soon be on your way to having gorgeously straight teeth and a “Wafelbakker smile!” While everyone’s treatment plan varies, here are some tips to follow so that you stay on track to have your braces removed—all while keeping your braces looking and feeling great.

First, you should be sure to avoid certain foods during your course of treatment. A good rule of thumb is to avoid anything hard, sticky or chewy (such as gum, taffy, caramels, corn, nuts and popcorn).

Another tip is to keep braces clean by brushing and flossing after every meal. A water flosser also is a great tool that will keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Also, there are several ways to fix a poking wire. Use wax; clip with a nail cutter; or even use a pencil eraser to bend a wire back into place. Of course, you can always come to the clinic or call our after-hours emergency line so a clinician can fix the wire.

Finally, be sure to keep scheduled appointments. Also, try not to get any loose braces as this may prolong your treatment time.

By following these tips, you’ll keep your teeth and gums healthy while undergoing treatment and stick to your timeline for having your braces removed.
