Braces, Adventure, and the Great Outdoors — A Summer Survival Guide

June is National Great Outdoors Month — a time to embrace the sunshine, get active, and enjoy everything summer has to offer. At Wafelbakker Anderson Orthodontics, we want our patients to know that having braces shouldn’t hold you back from experiencing it all.

Whether you’re headed out on a weekend hike, joining a summer sports league, or planning a family vacation, a few simple tips can help you protect your smile while making the most of the season.

Stay Active — and Stay Protected

Braces don’t stop you from enjoying outdoor fun, but they do require a bit of extra attention. If you’re playing any contact sports, wearing a well-fitting orthodontic mouthguard is essential. It can prevent injuries to both your mouth and your braces.

For non-contact activities like hiking, biking, or swimming, no special gear is required — just keep your oral hygiene consistent and your hydration high.

What to Pack in Your Braces Travel Kit

If you’re traveling this summer, bring along a compact kit to make oral care easy on the go. We recommend including:

  • Toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste (travel size if possible)
  • Dental floss and a floss threader or water flosser
  • Orthodontic wax to address any minor irritation
  • Rubber bands, if prescribed as part of your treatment
  • A small mirror for quick visual checks
  • Travel-size mouthwash for added freshness

Packing these items together in a zippered pouch keeps them organized and easy to access, whether you’re camping, flying, or on a road trip.

Foods to Avoid During Summer Activities

Many seasonal treats can be tough on braces. Be cautious with the following:

  • Sticky candies such as caramel, taffy, or gummy candy
  • Hard snacks like nuts, pretzels, and popcorn
  • Whole fruits (cut apples and corn off the cob before eating)
  • Ice chewing
  • Chewing gum

Instead, stick to softer options like yogurt, smoothies, soft fruits, or sliced veggies. These still allow you to enjoy summer flavors without the risk of damaging your braces.

Enjoy the Season — and Take Care of Your Smile

Braces are a temporary part of your journey, and they shouldn’t prevent you from living life to the fullest. With a little preparation and care, you can enjoy everything this season has to offer while keeping your treatment on track.
